The main line route, widely considered to be one of the most picturesque train journeys in all of Asia, whisks travellers from Colombo to Ella.
The train to Ella winds its way up the mountains of Sri Lanka to 1800-plus meters above sea level, as one watches tea pluckers at work.
Nuwara Eliya, famed for its tea, is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse and a golf club still bring the colonial era back to life.
The train stations too have retained their own colonial charm.
